The Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) accredits English language programs and institutions in international settings under its general accreditation category in the CEA Policies and Procedures. CEA is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education to accredit programs and institutions engaged in English and language teaching and learning activities. CEA does not accredit degree programs.

In settings outside the U.S., CEA staff consults with each applicant site to define scope, including what will be included in the accreditation review and the name of the accredited entity. This ensures that the accreditation review accurately reflects the program’s organizational structure, offerings, and governance.

Under general accreditation, CEA accredits English language programs delivered in a variety of settings, including:

• Programs within academic departments at colleges or universities
• Foundation or preparatory year programs within or affiliated with universities
• Independent private language schools
• Binational centers

 These programs may be governed by academic institutions, individual proprietors, governing boards, or other corporate structures.

Accreditation Process

The accreditation process for international sites follows the same steps as U.S. reviews as described in the CEA Policies and Procedures. Review activities are guided by the CEA Standards for English Language Programs and Institutions. CEA applies these processes consistently while taking any national and unique circumstances into account.

CEA is recognized by the Turkish Higher Education Quality Council (THEQC/YÖKAK) for the period between July 2025 and July 2030 as an authorized international accrediting agency for English language programs within Turkish higher education institutions.
