August 2013 CEA Updates

What's Inside

How CEA Is Meeting the Challenge: A Message from the Commission Chair

Since the passage of the Accreditation of English Language Training Programs Act in December 2010, large numbers of U.S. intensive English programs have been working to meet its accreditation requirement. Their efforts have resulted in incredible growth for CEA, both in numbers of programs and institutions participating in the accreditation process, as well as in numbers of volunteers and staff involved in assisting them through the process.

Up from the 109 accredited programs at this time last year, there are now 167 CEA-accredited sites, and another 70 are expected to complete the process for the first time by the end of this year. In addition, there are 100 more programs and institutions at some stage of the accreditation process.

Supporting this rapid growth has required CEA to grow in other ways this year:

  • Recruiting and training 12 former commissioners and reviewers to serve as CEA representatives on site visits, as well as assist staff in a variety of ways.
  • Sending out 160 trained CEA reviewers to serve as volunteer peer reviewers on site visits.
  • Adding two Commission meetings to the three regularly-scheduled meetings and expanding the December 2013 meeting to accommodate the increased number of reviews being considered.
  • Hiring and training six full-time staff members, making the CEA office home to nine full-time staff members, plus a part-time education technology consultant, by the end of the year.
  • Doubling the square footage of the CEA office (we were fortunate that a large space, contiguous with the existing CEA office, became available) and purchasing new equipment to accommodate the increase in staff.

While some of these changes were in the hands of commissioners and staff, a critical element was not: the response of those in the field to the need for site reviewers. It is difficult to overstate our appreciation for all those who have volunteered their time to review sites. Without the help of these volunteers, CEA would not have been able to visit all the programs and institutions that required review this year.

As we head into the fall, CEA is well positioned to meet current needs of programs and institutions. And as always, staff and commissioners continue to plan strategically for a future in which accreditation is increasingly valued and sought by the field.
